In analogue gravity we investigate Earth-based experiments which are analogous to general-relativistic phenomena which seem very difficult to study directly. The experiments can be actually performed, or merely contemplated theoretically. The theoretical studies serve as “thought experiments” in which new insights can be achieved. This is particularly true since the analogue systems are often simpler than the actual gravitational systems. Whether experimental or theoretical, the goal of analogue gravity is to further our understanding of the actual general-relativistic phenomena.
