The hate poem “Der Judenturm” appeared on the 30 April 1933 in the Leipziger Tageszeitung. It is directed at Hans Kroch (1887 Leipzig-1970 Jerusalem) a Jewish banker. Although his name is not explicitly mentioned in the poem, there is no doubt that he is the target:  The tower in the title refers to the highest building in Leipzig known as the Kroch Hochhaus which was the Kroch bank building. The second line in the poem “Ein reicher Jude wie heist er doch” rhymes nicely with Kroch.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I have translated the original German poem into English and both original and translation are given below. The translation is not verbatim, since I wanted to preserve the tempo and rhymes of the original. However, I did make the effort to keep the translation faithful to the spirit of the original. The poem refers to images on a frieze displayed at the front of the Kroch bank, shown between the English and German version.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

The tower of the Jew<\/strong> <\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Once upon a time, there was
A rich Jew, everybody knows;
He built a huge tower
For us all to admire.
These were bad times for us all
But the Jew, he had a ball,
The tower, clear as broad daylight
Was the Jew\u2019s display of might;
With money made from petty haggling
The Jew mocked all those struggling;
With cunning slyness and deceit
He put subversive artwork into concrete: <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The mighty hand the hammer swings
Production lines and sickle sings.
Is this indeed just mere chance
That we can see a Soviet stance?
Star, hammer and sickle tightly flank
The tower of a Jewish bank.
On the right, Isaac the boy
His father, his knife, what a ploy
A bloody story with a ram
Is depicted in this frame <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Next scene: A Jew relaxing in a boat
with Jewish beard just like a goat.
The boat and Jew idly sail
As German oarsmen beat the trail
Full of smugness is the fat Jew
Sipping bottles of fresh dew:
A master of a German land
With the steering in his hand.
Bathing both in sun and gold
Pleases him and makes him bold:
The Soviet Star, high in the sky,
Points the way to the Jewish eye <\/p>\n\n\n\n

On the tower, two lions stand
Holding a ball in their hands
Fearful and frightening with greed
With claws that can make you bleed
Full of arrogance and of pride
The Jew has Judah on his side
Full of greed and of ambition
The Judean tower has a mission
And the writing on the wall
Wraps it up and says it all<\/p>\n\n\n\n

All the harvest and the dues
Feed the fat and greedy Jews
The vine above, it is well known
A symbol of the Jewish throne
The beloved German oak
On the treetop eagles croak

Youthful blacksmith at the anvil
With a workload he can’t hope to fulfill
Omnia vincit labor
A Soviet star in galore
With a red sign behind
The meaning is easy to find

Der Judenturm<\/strong> <\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Es war einmal, wisst ihr es noch
Ein reicher Jude wie heist er doch?
Der lies sich einen Turm erbauen
Die ganze Stadt soll danach schauen
In jener Zeit ging’s uns nicht gut,
in Stadt und Land spreizt \u00a0sich der Jud’,
der Turm, heut merkt’s ein jeder wohl
er war der Juden Macht Symbol,
das mit errafftem Schachergel
ein Jud’ zum Hohn uns hingestellt
Mit arger List und schlau bedacht
ist dort ein Bildwerk angebracht: <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Den Hammer schwingt die starke Hand
Die  Sichel  schmiedend,  werkgewand
ist’s Zufall oder Absicht wohl,
da\u00df hier des Sowjetstaat’s Symbol.
Stern, Hammer, Sichel eng vereint
an diesem Judenturm erscheint
Dort recht der Knabe mit dem  sack,
auch er  front f\u00fcr  das  Judenpack
Als  Sch\u00e4chter ist der  Jude bekannt
Erkennt ihr, was am linken rand
Der bildwerks als bedeutung habe
Der wider um mit ihm der  knabe
Ein Jud sitzt  faul in einem Kahn
mitt Judenbart und im Kaftan
und Kahn und Jud’ wird fortbewegt
von einem deutschen Ruderknecht.
Der Jud’ mit eitlem Wohlgefallen,
bl\u00e4ht sich auf einem Wasserballen.
Er d\u00fcnkt sich Herr im deutschen Land
und h\u00e4lt das Steuer in der Hand.
Die Sonne als des Gold’s Symbol,
strahlt ihm zun\u00e4chst, das tut ihm wohl.
Den Sowjetstern, links \u00fcberm Kahn,
steuert der Jud’ als Richtpunkt an.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Am Turme aber oben steh’n
zwei  L\u00f6wen, greulich anzuseh’n,
die sehr gierig und verwegen
Die Klaue auf die Kugel legen.
Dem L\u00f6wen gleich in seiner Kraft
stellt sich gern dar die Judenschaft.
Der L\u00f6we Juda langgeschweift,
voll Gier die ganze Welt ergreift.
Am Judenturme haben unten
wir viel Symbolisches gefunden
und lessen  jetzt  die  Schrift, gemach,
ganz  oben    unter’m flachen  Dach.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Die schwere Wolke voller regen
bringt  nur dem  fetten  Jude segen
Der rebstock ist set alter zeit
Das fruchtsymbol der judenheit
Se sehr wie ihn hier fruchtgeschwellt
Der deutsche eiche is gefallt
Der adler sitzt auf ihrem rest
Mit ihrem wipfel barst ein nest
Der Jude hat doch nie gesast
In seiner fron der Knecht dort maht
Am Ambo\u00df dort der junge  Schmied
ist  auch  ein  Fronknecht, wie  man  sieht<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Omnia  vincit  labor
und einen Sowjetstern  davor
das selbe  rote   Zeichen hinten
die  Deutung  ist  nicht schwer zu  finden
Frei  \u00fcbertragen,  jeden Falles:
\u00bbDie Arbeit \u00fcberwindet alles\u00ab,
Der  Jud’   ist  als  Ansteller  gro\u00df,
Er  hat  zwei linke  H\u00e4nde  blo\u00df.
Er  denkt  bei  sich,  solang  ihr  schafft,
