Five-dimensional gauge theories are in general not well-defined\u00a0as quantum field theories.\u00a0The Yang-Mills coupling has dimension of mass^(-1\/2), making these\u00a0theories non-renormalizable,\u00a0which means that we cannot consistently remove the UV cutoff used to\u00a0regularize loop amplitudes.\u00a0Physically the theories become strongly coupled in the UV, where they\u00a0must be replaced by some “UV complete” theory.\u00a0In some cases, however, Seiberg<\/a> argued that there exist supersymmetric\u00a0UV fixed points described by strongly interacting five-dimensional\u00a0superconformal field theories, although these CFT’s do not seem to\u00a0admit a Lagrangian description.<\/p>\n

In view of the AdS\/CFT duality it is natural to wonder whether these\u00a05d CFT’s admit 6d AdS gravity duals.\u00a0This case of the AdS\/CFT correspondence has been the least studied.\u00a0It is complicated by the fact that the amount of supersymmetry is reduced\u00a0relative to the maximal supersymmetry\u00a0cases in other dimensions, making it harder to find 6d AdS solutions by\u00a0dimensional reduction of supergravity.\u00a0The first explicit example was found by Brandhuber and Oz<\/a>, who made use\u00a0of a brane construction in string theory\u00a0to relate the fixed point CFT of a particular 5d gauge theory based on the\u00a0gauge group USp(2N)\u00a0to a ten-dimensional geometry with a non-compact 6d AdS component\u00a0and a compact 4-sphere.<\/p>\n

Recently, O. Bergman and D. Rodriguez-Gomez<\/a> have generalized this\u00a0case to three classes of 5d\u00a0supersymmetric gauge theories involving products of symplectic and\u00a0unitary groups, and argued\u00a0that they are dual to geometries where the compact part is replaced by\u00a0an orbifold of a 4-sphere.\u00a0These new examples allow for several non-trivial checks of the duality,\u00a0by comparing various wrapping modes\u00a0of branes on compact cycles with operators in the 5d CFT that carry the\u00a0corresponding global symmetry charges.\u00a0This also opens the door to a number of further generalizations related\u00a0to the possibility of turning on various\u00a0fluxes on the cycles.<\/p>\n
